Overcoming the fear of going to the gym- My Top Tips

Hi guys!

I thought today I’ll share with you a few tips on how I overcome my fear of the gym.
I know so many of you fear the thought of the gym..don’t worry I was the same.
Basically, a few months back even the thought of walking through the gym made me feel anxious. I thought everyone would be looking at me, everyone would be better at using the machines, everyone would do more reps with higher weights etc. I was afraid people would laugh at me as I was a complete newbie.

If you have similar thoughts let me tell you, you are WRONG! Absolutely no-one will do the above, guys. I have not met a nicer bunch of people than the ones in my gym. I know I am not the best at weightlifting and most certainly cannot run as fast and as long as some others, but I am doing the best for myself by giving my body the chance to sweat and change itself while working out. As I mentioned in a previous post, I struggled hard with my own mind for majority of my life (on and off). Making the decision to overcome a fear that in return will make me love my own body (for the first time ever) was such a hard yet rewarding step in my journey.

By all means, you can set up a gym at home and work out there, but honestly going to the gym makes me much more motivated. I cannot work as hard at home as I would in the gym and for now this is the cheapest option too. Proper gym equipment (and the servicing and upkeep) is not cheap !! I do want to have my own gym at home if and when I move out but that is a different story for a different time 🙂

Overcoming the Fear

I have a few tips that I recommend you to try if you find it hard to walk through the door of your gym:

  • Headphones. OMG these are still something I carry around with me to every gym sesh. I LOVE music and I have my own style and my own favourites. My gym plays normal hits that you would listen to on the radio. As you may know that is not really my scene so I do love listening to my own music with a much heavier beat when I work out. It also helps me get into the ‘zone’ and forget about everything around me and concentrate solely on my workout. TRUST ME it works wonders… Having your own music comforts your mind and by doing that your body will be at ease and you will slowly start enjoying yourself and loving the gym. I know I did!
  • Playlist. This sort of goes with the above. Take time and make yourself an up beat playlist for your workout. A good beat is essential for me when I run for example. (I love listening to Rammstein during my LISS sessions on the treadmill- 1 hour of pure German goodness ) There is nothing worse than taking time out of your workout shuffling the songs on your iPod.. waste of precious time ! DON’T DO IT!
  • Have a plan. This may be hard if you are super new to working out. I would recommend starting in your gym and booking an introduction session with one of the PTs.(personal trainers) This usually is free, as they would just walk around and show you how to use the machines, how to operate things etc. I recommend this as the next time you come you will know where things are kept etc and you won’t walk around looking for things. It also allows you to ask some questions from the PT. Don’t be afraid, they are there to help you along, and they will point you to the right direction 🙂 . Trust them they know what they are talking about. It’s not a bad idea to take some classes from a personal trainer and then once you know a few moves etc you can then work out by yourself. HOWEVER not everyone has the spare cash (I was the same) so I just googled and watched youtube for inspiration. Pinterest is also good. BUT BE CAREFUL! I researched most of the workouts and made sure I get the posture right as I did not want to hurt myself. ASK THE PTs.
So yeah, I write up an exercise plan before I go to the gym every single time. It keeps me on track I get everything done and then I come home. I get things done better, faster and more effectively with a plan. (I do have a PT too as I am getting ready for a competition but it is not essential if you can get yourself motivated enough)
  • Take pictures. What I mean is take a before picture of yourself in a few angles, and it will keep you motivated. TRUST ME. I love watching my body change. There is absolutely nothing wrong with my ‘before’ picture but it is amazing how your body changes in such a little time. I love it! It also helps you see the changes. You live in your body everyday (obviously) and see yourself daily, but its not the same seeing yourself from above as it is from the point of view of another person. It doesn’t have to be for anyone else, but yourself.
  • Friends. I had a few friends that have already started going to the free classes our gym offers before I moved to Ireland so I joined them a few weeks after I moved. The classes were great to get me started on this crazy journey. Most gyms offer the classes so don’t be afraid to ask about them. It is definitely a great way to get your confidence up.
If you don’t already have friends that attend the gym, try and convince a few to tag along with you. The gym is not just for bodybuilders!

Last very important point!! Please DO NOT COMPARE yourself to anyone else, and make sure you do this for your own body. All you can do is try your best and trust me it will be worth it. Don’t punish yourself if you decide to have a cheat week, you can always get back on track. If you really want to achieve something you will be able to. Everyone is different and everyones body is different so concentrate on your goals and you will do great at achieving them.

Thanks for reading (I know it was a bit long).

Taking baby steps towards a better me

Hi guys!

I can’t believe how much my life has changed in the past few months.

So from my previous (I know its been ages) post you know that I have moved back home with the parents. I took this opportunity to actually get my life in order again and to do something for myself. And thats EXACTLY what I have been doing in the past few weeks. Keep reading to see what I am talking about!

filsjourney- fitness

Coming back home has not exactly been the easiest ride of my life. Adapting to living with the parents after being independent living alone for 6 years has had its ups and downs for sure. I am so lucky though to have such amazing parents who just let me take my time with settling in and doing my own things. Anyways enough about that. So here I was, back in my childhood bedroom trying to figure out what to do next. I was lucky to get a job pretty much straight away which has helped me to put aside money worries. But I was stuck whether should I do a course, should I eat my weight in pasta (not the worst choice ha), should I start working out, should I this should I that…

This is when I realised that I need to take things easy and slow down with the planning. Don’t get me wrong planning your life is great, but I was going over the top. I wanted things to happen and to happen quick instead of making long term plans. I went through a lot in the first few months of the year and I had to get my mind into the right place before I could plan anything else, such as studying.

A few weeks have passed and I was starting to feel much more comfortable with my situation. I was settling into work, my mind was recovering from the breakup and I was starting to go to the gym. YES, … me,…  I started going to the gym.. Still ate crap and takeaways etc but I was getting into a new routine.

This is when everything started clicking into place. I decided that instead of studying a new course, I wanted to get fit. I wanted to get fit every New Years, every month at least once but was just never in the right place mentally before. BUT this time it was different. This time I decided to go big with the plans and have done a lot of research and set out an achievable (VERY HARD BUT ACHIEVABLE) goal.

I signed myself up to a fitness competition. AND PLEASE don’t be one of those who imagines a fitness competition having 1 category which is the super muscled women. THATS just one of MANY categories. Give it a google and you’ll see that you can have bikini, toned and physique. Physique is where you’ll see the huge muscles and honestly (virtual) hat off to those competitors as it ain’t easy being so ripped. I of course sign ed up to the bikini division, as I want to build slight muscle with definition but keep feminine. (thats what the website describe it as).

So I am starting week 3 of my prep (got about 18 weeks) on Monday and I am super excited to see results. I will surely keep you posted and will do a before/after style post half way through as well as at the end of my prep. It is hard, and requires a lot of dedication already but I can see my body change and I just feel like a different person. I think I have found my happiness again. I can’t complain!

Make sure to follow me on my other social media to keep up to date with my meals and post workout selfies (neither of them is pretty but heyho).

Please let me know if you have done something similar or if you have ideas on how to keep motivated in similar situation.

Why have I gone offline-big changes

Hi guys!

filsjounrey_offline_quote_canva_fotor.png

As you may have noticed I have been offline for the past 3-5 weeks. I have had some big changes in my life. These were unfortunately unplanned and have come as a massive shock to my system. I have not been funtioning at my 100%, and I always want to make sure that you guys get my 100%. I am trying to pick up the pieces and get everything back into order very soon.

This is not how I planned my start of the new year, but I am positive about all things that are happening and I am a firm believer that all things happen for a reason. I have a lot of new and exciting things planned for Filsjourney and I cannot wait to get back on track with it all in the next few weeks.

I would like to ask for your patience and your support, and I will try to share my story once it has all sinked in, and once I feel a little better.

Glossybox review- January 2017

Hey guys,

Yay, it is my favourite time of the month, it’s Glossybox time!!
Since it’s the first book of the year, of course it is going to be a special edition. This month glossy box have collaborated with the one and only ‘Deliciously Stella’. Click the link and head over to her Instagram, she’s super funny.

glossybox-january-2017

Let’s what we got this month

Nip Fab- Kale fix moisturiser– This is a superfood salad for your face. It contains kale, watercress, almond oil, aloe vera and shea butter. It promises to help moisturise, protect, sooth and smooth your skin. It sounds like the perfect product for me. The moisturiser has a lovely consistency, but it is not too heavy on your skin. The smell is a little odd, but I do like it. It smells similar to them old school cucumber peeler masks my mum used to use. This retails for around £15, which is a bit pricey for a moisturiser, but if it is like the other NipFab products, it is worth it.

Unani- Illuminate Milk Cleanser– I’m not going to lie, I have never heard of this brand before. To be fair this is why I love my glossybox subscription so much, as it introduces me to lots of lovely new brands. This product is like a makeup remover/moisturiser/cleanser all in one. Sounds perfect for the lazy days. This retails for $18 or around £14. That seems pretty reasonable for such a big bottle. Let’s hope it does what it says.

The balm- Meet Matt(e) Trimony Eyeshadow– So we had a sneak peek of this in last month’s box. I do love the sneak peek feature, as it gets me even more excited for the future boxes. So this is one shade from the balms palette of 9. I received shade ‘matt kumar’ which is a deep burgundy colour. I have swatched it on the back of my hand and it seems really pigmented, but would blend really well. I am looking forward to creating some great looks with this in the next few weeks. Keep your eyes peeled for some tutorials.  The palette costs about £38 which is rather expensive, so I expect this to be amazing!

True organic of Sweden- All you need is me– This is another ‘good for everything’ kinda product. It is completely chemical free, you can use it on your hair, body, face, lips etc. I have been using my aloe-vera gel for my breakouts but I will definitely try this too. Seems great, and retails for £20. That’s also reasonable price, and I’m impressed that we got the bigger 50ml product rather than the 15ml.

Lastly, another fantastic facemark by Vitamasques. If you have read my previous reviews, (if not just click on the above categories and then the Glossybox section) you will know that we have received vitamasques products before, and I LOVED them. It’s because of them that I love full face sheet masks, and I was in need of a new one this week. I can’t wait to try this one, full of Manuka honey goodness. Apparently it smells good enough to eat. This is priced £3.99 which is fantastic.

So as you can see, we received 4 full size products which is awesome! AAND a lovely little notebook too. Who doesn’t love them, especially this time of the year. I am so excited to try these out. I have recently been really good with my skincare routine and have been focusing on making sure that my skin is always cleansed and moisturised at night time therefore all of these will help me out. I think everyone starts the year with a new skincare routine, so this is the perfect box. Also after easing a lot of junk food over Christmas, I’ve had loads of breakouts so these will help me make my skin nice and perfect again.

What do you guys think of this months box?

Let’s get fit in 2017

Hey guys!

Can you believe it’s nearly the middle of the month?? Crazy how fast the time goes.

If you follow me on my other social media, you would already know that I have restarted my fitness journey. I have joined my local Slimming World group a couple of weeks before Christmas, and I really enjoy it. It is a complete lifestyle change, rather than a fab diet, which is what I was looking for. With Slimming World I have found that for me it is a couple of light adjustment in my cooking style that is helping me. I have always liked vegetables, ate a lot of fruit too but ordered takeaways a few times a week. With the hundreds of recipes on their website, app and books it is so easy to find a delicious alternative to your favourite junk meal. I am really enjoying this ‘diet’ and it is something I will use for years to come.

lets-get-fit-2017

I have also joined the rest of the #bbgcommunity on the 12 weeks challenge. If you have never heard of BBG you need to give it a quick google. It is a 12 week (and more) exercise plan designed by Kayla Itsines, who is an Australian personal trainer, and her boyfriend Toby. The purpose of the programme is to complete 3 resistance, 3 cardio and a few recovery sessions per week.

What I tend to do is:
Monday,Wednesday and Saturday- I do my cardio
Tuesday,Friday and Sunday- I do my resistance
Thursday- This is the day I go to Slimming World, therefore also have my cheat meal and my rest- get it all done in one go eh?

It sounds crazy and super hard work, but I have seen great results, and I have also done the programme a few times for a few weeks and you get use to it. Its worth it for me! This time around I am extremely motivated, and by connecting with others and documenting my process here and on my Instagram, I can ensure that I stick with it and SUCCEED. I am excited to see big changes as I am concentrating on both healthy eating AND working out.

BBG explained
Resistance training: So you have 3 of these to do a week for the 12 weeks programme. Each of your training sessions will target a certain muscle group and area of your body. The 3 groups are : Legs, Arms & Abs, Full body– I complete them in this order on the days stated above. Each of the three groups are made up of 2 circuits, in which you have 4 workouts.
Each circuit should be carried out for the total of 7 minutes without stopping, and you should do the 4 exercise after each other as many time as you can in those 7 minutes, with little rest or non at all. Once the first 7 minutes are done, take a 30 seconds rest and straight onto circuit 2 for the same 7 minute routine. Once the 14 minutes are done, you start again and do circuit one and then two as many times as you can for the next 14 minutes. It may sound easy as you are repeating 8 exercises, but believe me I was only able to do the 4 exercises ONCE in 7 minutes.

Now, when I have restarted my programme I am much more motivated and work extra hard during my circuits. I am able to complete the circuit of four workouts TWICE in 7 minutes, which means I do each exercise 4 times, totalling to 32 exercises. At first I thought it is going to be easy, but I  am telling you, it is really hard at times but push yourself and you will do great.

Cardio training: Now you have the option of doing LISS or HIIT exercises in between your resistance. I am currently focusing on building up my strength and not overdoing it, therefore I do a LISS workout. This for me consists of a steady walk for 40 minutes. It goes really fast for me as I just ‘jump’ on the treadmill and stick some music on. Obviously there are many more ways to get your LISS in, such as walking outside, jogging, cross trainer etc as long as you do it on a low intensity level for at least the 40 minutes. HIIT is the complete opposite as it is interval training, which in my case will be 30 seconds fast running on the treadmill and then followed by 30 seconds walk. Alternating these for around 15-20 minutes will no doubt get you sweating.

That is it really, and I bet you are really confused now, but just head over to Kayla’s website to read more. She’s much better at explaining what her plans are about. She not only does ebooks, but now has an app, a new book and some fitness equipment. She’s very active on Instagram and if you want some motivational images, quotes and cute pictures of her huskies I recommend that you go over and follow her here.

Any of you guys have heard of BBG or are doing BBG now? Let me know I would love to follow your progress.

Love,

What I got for Christmas 2016

Hey guys!!

I hope everyone has had a fantastic Christmas holidays.
I had a lovely time, and cannot wait to repeat it at home with my family next week. 🙂

I have truly been spoilt this year and thought I’ll show you guys all the goodies Santa brought me.
I REALLY enjoy reading similar posts and I am not bragging whatsoever, I just wanted to show you what I received.

As you may know from the Blogmas posts, that I have spent my Christmas with my lovely boyfriend and his family this year. I will be going home to see my family to celebrate with them too.

what-got-for-christmas-2016-filsjourney-blogger

Lush products:
I got SOOO many fizzies this year. I love Lush, and I’m so grateful to my friends and J for getting me some new bath bombs and bubble bars. All I need now is some free time where I can get a long relaxing bath.

Urban decay-All nighter spray- If you have read my Christmas wishlist, you know that I have been wanting this for so long! I have tried it a few times in the past week and it makes such a massive difference. I love it already and I will definitely repurchase once empty.

Illustrated Harry Potter book- OMG I am so happy that J got me this! He kindly got my the first one last year, and he has kept with the traditions. It is a beautiful book and as I’ve said before I am excited to read it to the kids in the future 🙂

Harry Potter colouring book- Now I have one of these already, in a different style. I LOVE it and it’s so good for de-stressing. I love that colouring books have come back into play for adults in the past few years.

Tarte cosmetics- Graveyardgirl Swamp Queen palette- Need I say more? I nearly cried when I opened this. I have been watching Bunny for years, and when she came out with this palette I was super excited. I never actually got the chance to purchase it myself as it was ALWAYS out of order. J has really surprised me with this and I absolutely love it. I will be doing a review on it shortly with a tutorial. It’s the most pigmented palette I own. LOVE LOVE LOVE it.

House of crafts- candle making kit- I think this is a subtle hint from J. I buy WAY too many candles during the year and I think he wants me to start making my own instead of spending £££’s on Yankee candles. I have been wanting to make my own candles and other crafty bits for years, so I am looking forward to playing with this goodie.

Bare Minerals- Glow kit- I got this from J’s mum, and I absolutely love it. Bare minerals is the BEST. There is a plumping lip gloss, highlighter, blusher, concealer and a makeup bag in this kit. I know I will use this a lot this year, and it will last for ages. All of my bare minerals products last me for months and are really good for my skin. I never have breakouts when I use these products which is a bonus, as I am prone to breakout on and around my chin from quite a few products.

Clothes- I’ve got the two band t-shirts from J’s sister. I was really excited to see she got me a Motley one, as I didn’t get the chance to pick one up when we went to see them. I wore this already and its super comfy and looks great with just some leggings and boots. She also got me a Black Sabbath one. YAY I am so excited to see them in a few weeks!!

oasis-jumper-sequin-love-filsjourney

J’s lovely grandparents got me this beautiful grey jumper. It has sequin circles all over it and it is the softest material ever. I love this, as I don’t own any quality jumpers. I love it a lot and I am very thankful that they have gotten me a gift.

I received so many other gifts from J’s father as well. We got a little bonsai tree, candles, chocolate and cooking books. They also got me a colour changing umbrella. It is the best idea ever, and I am looking forward to our next rainy walk. Easily done in the UK 🙂

I am very grateful for all of my gifts and had a fantastic Christmas.

Bring on this year, and I cannot wait to see what 2017 has to bring for FilsJourney.

Happy New Year guys

Love,

Blogmas 2016- Glossybox review December 2016

Hey guys!

As you all know, I love this time of the month, as it is Glossybox review time. I am so excited about this, as I absolutely love everything in the box. It’s like a pre Christmas present given to me by myself.

In the November box, we were shown a sneak peek of a lipstick that we will be getting this month. We also had a chance to pick either the berry tone or the nude one. I opted for the nude so I was excited to see if I finally managed to get one that doesn’t make me look all washed out.

Blogmas-2016-glossybox-december-2016.jpg

MDM Flow– Semi-matte Lipstick in the shade ‘Bossy’
YAYY!!! I have FINALLY found the perfect nude lipstick for myself. I love love love this shade. The Lipstick itself comes in a lovely gold packaging, very similar to a Vicks inhaler actually. It’s small and compact so it is great for your handbag and for travel. I cannot wait to test it for a full day. I am really excited to try it with some lip gloss, as well as on its own.
It retails for £18 which is a reasonable price these days. Also, make sure to check out the rest of their shades as there are SO SO many.

Essence-luminizer palette
I actually have a few Essence products already, and they are EXTREMELY affordable. Honestly, they are not that bad and one of the lipsticks I have is actually my all time daily favourite. This palette has three different highlighters, which are actually rather pigmented. I was pleasantly surprised with the product and for about £3, you really can’t go wrong.

Gosh– Mono eyeshadow in the shade dark green
Gosh is actually a brand that I don’t really use all that often. I do have a beautiful purple lipstick, so I was really excited to give this a swatch. Green is actually a really nice colour to wear if you have brown eyes. I am looking forward to trying this out properly, as it is rather dark so a lot of blending is needed I think. Retail price of £8.99 I find is a little expensive, but this is why I love Glossybox.

Revlon– Nail enamel in Gray Suede
OOOHHH This is gorgeous. I actually get acrylic nails done once a fortnight as I am rubbish with applying nail varnish. I actually use a similar colour to this on my acrylics during the summer, and it is really pretty. It is another nude/pink shade, which would go well with any outfit. Revlon says that the varnish will stay on your nails for 10 days without chipping. I’m not sure about that if you do a lot of housework and washing the dishes every night, but it does seem to be a thick consistency. This is something I will gift to one of my friends. REtials at £6.49 which isn’t the cheapest but if it does what it says on the ‘tin’ I would recommend it.

And finally we got the Lipcote-Browcote
Now I was really buzzing about this as I have just used the last of my brow setter liquid. This is a waterproof transparent eyebrow gel, that promises to set your eyebrow makeup for hours. I am a big fan of perfect brows, so this is another product that I will use and hope it works just as well as it says it does. It’s priced £6.99 which isn’t too bad either.

I was truly impressed with this box as well as the past few I’ve had. I think Glossybox has done well, and I am looking forward to the January box.

Love,
Fil, x
